We first joined the TEDxTruro family in 2016 and continued the partnership in 2018, filming a day of ideas shaped around the theme of Wonder.

The programme moved from imagination and memory to conservation, space and the search for new antibiotics in mysterious places. Every talk is collected below.

Imagination, storytelling and the importance of wonder

Writer, performer and storyteller Ollie Oakenshield talks about the magic he has experienced through theatre and nature, how imagination influences reality, how storytelling changes our experiences and the importance of wonder in the face of life’s mysteries.

How cake can improve your memory

Christine Jensen

Can cakes improve your memory? In this delicious talk, award-winning cake designer Christine Jensen explains how cakes can evoke wonder and create memories that stick.

Hugh Hastings

In a world that is obsessed with today, the future and the new are we loosing the life affirming experience of looking at photographs of the past? Hugh Hastings is a professional photographer and writer who lives in Cornwall. He was the official photographer for Chelsea Football Club for 10 years and has managed the Club’s official photographic archives since 2008.

Finding new antibiotics in deep, dark and wonderous places

Mathew Upton

If new, powerful antibiotic drugs are not discovered, we ‘may’ return to the pre-antibiotic era. Mathew Upton from the University of Plymouth thinks that the solution may lie deep under the surface of the ocean, in dark, cold environments where weird and wonderful sponges live.

Nicola Hodgins

Dolphin hybrids are very rare, but what causes this phenomenon? Nicola Hodgins from the international charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation discusses some of the reasons dolphins may interbreed.

Sacha Dench

Conservationist and adventurer Sacha Dench flew the 7000km journey from the high arctic to the UK in a paramotor, following the migration of wild swans. Her talk encourages us to wonder what unique combination of skills, knowledge and passion we each have – and leaves us understanding that we have the key to creating own extraordinary lives.

Lucy Edge

Spacecraft engineer Lucy Edge shares her vision of how emerging space technologies can help us defy distance and time to create more diverse, inclusive and kind virtual communities.

Consciousness and psychedelics

Peter Sjöstedt-H

Philosopher of mind Peter Sjöstedt-H discusses the hidden impact psychedelics have had on philosophy and asks if such extreme, altered modes of mind could help give us answers to some of the big questions facing the philosophers and scientists of today.

Looking back at Wonder

TEDxTruro 2018 was an extraordinary event that allowed us to be a part of a community focused on sharing ideas, exploring curiosity, and inspiring change.
